Several CDMI members participated in a recent conference titled, Communication & Cultural Policy in the Age of the Platform, held online. It was hosted by McMaster University’s Communications Governance Observatory, and the Centre for Networked Media and Performance.

Elisha Lim presented as part of the Roundtable on Algorithmic Literacy on May 5. David Nieborg and Lianrui Jia each presented during the panel Platform Governance: Media Policy or Telecoms Regulation as Guide, on May 6. Mary Elizabeth (M.E.) Luka chaired the Canadian Cultural Policy panel on May 4, as well as being a co-presenter on a paper during that panel, on the Archive Counter/Archive governance structure. M.E. also facilitated a roundtable on transformations in arts and media policy, including pre- and post-COVID opportunities to shift the policy regime. The roundtable included Kelly Wilhelm (CMF-FMC), Lise Ann Johnson (Canada Council for the Arts), Charlie Wall-Andrews (SOCAN Foundation; Ryerson University), and Michelle van Beusekom (Uvagut TV).

Colleagues from the Department of Arts, Culture & Media also presented during the conference. Sherry Yu presented research on Canadian Broadcasting and Cultural Diversity during the Broadcast and Digital Media panel on May 6. Mark Campbell and Laura Risk contributed to the roundtable on Music, Platforms & the Pandemic: How do we go forward? How can policy help?, also on May 6.
